Dad meets CDHB over son’s death By Georgia O’Connor-Harding GREENDALE MAN Geoff Booth has met with health authorities over the death of his son – but they have not been able to tell him anything. Mr Booth’s son Liam, 21, died from suspected suicide on October 2, days after he had been treated at Hillmorton Hospital. Mr Booth (right) has filed a formal complaint with the Canterbury District Health Board, and has now met with some of their key managers.

He asked them what had gone wrong. “They went really quiet, all of them. They were upset,” he told the Selwyn Times. “They can’t tell me anything, and they won’t tell me anything before Christmas. And it is not a quick outcome.” Mr Booth told the managers hospital staff had wrongly taken Liam’s word he was not going to harm himself. He said the managers replied that that was all they could do.

Liam’s body was found in Beckenham Park, close to where he lived. About three weeks earlier he had threatened to harm himself at Halswell Quarry Park. Police were called and he was taken to Christchurch Hospital. He was discharged and continued receiving outpatient treatment at Hillmorton Hospital. Mr Booth said he was not going to let the matter rest. “We are not going to let this

lie, we are going to keep on pushing,” he said. “They certainly know they are at fault and there is no fault from our side. I did everything in my power to keep Liam alive,” Mr Booth said. The CDHB would not discuss the meeting with the Selwyn Times. He will write to Selwyn MP Amy Adams and newly-elected Minister of Health David Clark. Liam’s death has been referred to the Coroner.

Doggone good performance at championships By Georgia O’ConnorHarding LONG HOURS of training two dogs to leap, weave and race through challenging obstacle courses has paid off for Jess Tansey. The Selwyn Dog Training Club member walked away as one of the most successful dog handlers at the Black Hawk New Zealand Dog Agility Championships. The national competition was held in Kihikihi, Waikato. More than 600 dogs engaged in about 6000

GEOFF BOOTH has a long road ahead of him as he strives for answers over the death of his son Liam. Liam died of suspected suicide, a terrible thing that leaves families wondering literally forever why, and more importantly, could it have been prevented. Geoff, from Greendale, has met with district health board managers (see page 1) but they were unable to give him answers. Geoff has laid a complaint over Liam’s care. Liam had mental health issues and was being treated through Hillmorton Hospital. Geoff believes Liam should never have been in a situation to potentially harm himself – given about three weeks before his death he had threatened self harm and was taken to hospital by the police. Time will tell whether Geoff gets the answers he needs. – Barry Clarke

The competition required handlers to guide their dogs through varied obstacle courses in the fastest time possible, without making mistakes. The obstacles included tunnels, ramps and jumpers. Jess said it was the best results she and her dogs had achieved. The 17-year-old had been training dogs for as long she could remember, first starting out running her parent’s dogs around courses before she properly learnt to train dogs when she was about eight. She has been based Selwyn Dog Training Club for two years and has trained eight dogs so far. She said the training takes a lot of patience and it all comes down to working out what motivates a dog. Jess said her two dogs’ personalities are the complete opposites. Swag is sweet, cuddly and more trustworthy on the obstacle course where as Rapid is fast,

crazy and more unpredictable. “I have to get my mum voice out,” she said. She has found the most difficult trick to teach her dogs were weaving poles. As well as taking on national

Final preparations for highland games

ONE OF the largest Scottish Festivals in the Southern Hemisphere will take place in Hororata next month. The Hororata Highland Games will be held at the Hororata Domain on November 11. Event manager Cindy Driscoll said it is a cultural festival with something for everyone and this year will be no exception. “The Scottish Heavy events are always an exciting and different sport for spectators with the best athletes in the world battling it out for the Oceania Heavyweight Championship,” she said. Mrs Driscoll said it has one of the biggest Highland dancing competitions in the country which runs right throughout the day. “The really cool thing about the games is not only can you watch all the different competitions, but you can have a go yourself,” she said. This year the games falls on Armistice Day, in respect of this, there will be a remembrance held at 11am. The Hororata Highland Game is a huge day out, with something to do right from gates opening at 9am until the closing ceremony at 4pm. • There is free parking on-site. Principal appointed for new Lincoln school

Claire Howison will lead the school when the first stage is scheduled to open in early 2019. She is currently St Albans School deputy principal where she has been since 2010. Lincoln South will be built in two stages on a 3.32 ha site adjacent to Liffey Stream, with a northern frontage to Russ Drive. Reserve mural at school A OUTDOOR mural capturing the beauty of Mahoe Reserve has been completed at Lincoln High School. The new mural located at school’s tuck shop was painted by the school’s sustainability council over the school holidays. Over the past school holidays students spent hours painting

the new mural designed by artist and Springston resident Mike Glover. The students chose to embark on the project as a way of raising awareness of the school’s sustainability council and to demonstrate what the Lincoln environment has to offer. This ranges from native plants in the Mahoe reserve to the

township’s church and Lincoln being the first Envirotown in New Zealand. The project was supported by the Lincoln Farmers’ and Craft Market. Year 13 student Amy Burney said it taught students the importance of working together with the community to promote awareness of the environment.

Australian race commentator Horse racing commentator Mark McNamara is about to embark on his busiest time of the year – Cup Week. He talks to Gordon Findlater about crossing the Tasman from New South Wales and living the dream in Selwyn You’ve been in Christchurch for a while now. Have you always been based in Weedons? It will be eight and a half years at the end of this year. We arrived in July 2009. We started in Mt Pleasant and rented a place up there for a while and didn’t really know where was where when we first moved to Christchurch. Then we bought a house in Rolleston just prior to the first earthquake. Our current place in Weedons we’ve been in for nearly three years. How long have you been calling races and how did you get into it? I started when I was about 15 and I’m now 39 so it’s been a 24-year whack. I got a job at the equivalent of Trackside in

Australia straight out of school. I had a cadetship there from 18 and it’s just gone from there. By the time I left it was mainly just race calling. Is it something you always

wanted to do as a child? I wanted to do it from the time I was a really young kid, we’re talking three or four-years-old. I went away from it a bit in my teens because it wasn’t cool. I

was lucky enough to get a break when I was 15. I happened to be at Randwick on Melbourne Cup day because I was skipping school and I got talking to a guy and he was the judge at Bulli

trot trials (New South Wales). I started calling at the trials there and that was the start of 24 years. Is there a race you called that sticks out in your mind as a favourite? Terror to Love’s third cup when he galloped away and it looked like it was over. That will always stick in my mind. The Sydenham Hurdles was the first race I called in New Zealand in 2009 and I’d never called a jumps race before, that will be another I’ll never forget. What about when things go wrong? A fog night at Addington is always fun when you can’t see anything. They put a camera on the back on the mobile and you end up calling most of the race off a monitor and just hope you can see something. Then they pop out of the fog for about the last 100m or 50m at the end. It’s actually good fun, you just have to enjoy it because you can’t see but nobody else can either. It ends up being a bit like a Lotto draw. What about a favourite race meeting? I love Cup Week. Obviously as busy as it is, it’s a wonderful week. Kaikoura Cup is my favourite meeting of the year.

The adrenaline is pumping. It’s a case of just keeping calm and not going off too early and just calling what you see. Personally, for me, I hope I’m happy with the job I do on the race because it’s a long 12 months to wait for it to come back around. Do you own any horses yourself? I’ve got three broodmares here. I own half a broodmare at Rangiora. I just sold a two-year-old to Aussie. I’ve got a yearling here and a trotter down south. So too many. What about outside of racing, what else are you interested in? I watch a lot of rugby league, I’m a massive Sharks fan. Also touch footy on a Tuesday night at West Melton is always good. The Cronulla Sharks NRL

Yes, I never thought I’d see the Sharks win a premiership, so if they never win another one in my lifetime then I’ve already seen more than I thought I would. I’m also lucky with my job, the hours are pretty flexible so I get to spend plenty of time with my kids and mill around at home. I’m pretty much a homebody, as my wife Katie and I are usually home. You have children? What’s life like at home? A boy and a girl. Will turns five next February and Bronte’s two and a half. They’ve got a pony each. There’s four chickens, two adopted roosters that sneak in from down the back, two dogs and a cat. Was it hard making the adjustment to living in Christchurch after moving from Aussie? It was pretty good because the traffic is so much better over here. I know it can still get pretty busy in peak times, but compared to Sydney, it’s a dream to get around. The weather didn’t take too much getting used to because I spent plenty of time growing up in Bathurst. They’ve got pretty similar weather

conditions there – it gets cold in winter and can snow. Over all, I settled in pretty well and Katie was the same. You talk about growing up near Bathurst. Do you like motorsports? No, doesn’t do anything for me. Although, I don’t mind the formula one. I’d love to go to the Monaco Grand Prix, but no, the V8s don’t do anything for me whatsoever. Can you ever see yourself doing anything else; what’s the expiry date on a race caller? As long as we’re doing a good job, it’s basically when we die (laughs). When the lungs give up or when the memory goes be-

cause it’s all done on the memorising of the colours. While the brain’s good, the eyes are strong and you’re calling accurately it’s your job almost for life. I’d imagine it’s a job that requires a lot of research. What do you do leading up to a race meeting? It’s the same routine for Addington on Friday and then it’s Riccarton on Saturday. I’ve then got a gallop recap show on Sunday. You know it’s coming and it goes by pretty fast really.

Growing Darfield brings issues Lincoln University students have undertaken a planning project if Darfield was to expand. Georgia O’Connor-Harding reports THE POPULATION of the once quiet Darfield has begun to soar. But with more growth comes more problems, a new Lincoln University report shows. Back in the 1970s, Darfield’s population barely stretched to 900. For years the small country town remained under the radar, but was commonly characterised as “the township under the nor’west arch” after the arch of cloud often spotted west of Darfield when the wind blew across the Southern Alps. But with a population projected to reach nearly 4000 by 2025, what was Karen once known as a Johnston service town for farming and the rural community is now starting to boom. Darfield currently has a population of about 2000. Long-time residents such as Malvern Butchery owner Pat McKay describe it as “the gateway to everywhere”. Located in the Canterbury Plains, Darfield is a main town leading to the Waimakariri and Rakaia rivers and onto the West Coast. “We have got a Fonterra plant, brick works and we have got a sawmill. How many towns in New Zealand can say they have got that?” Mr McKay said. The rapid development of the Central Plains Water Scheme has also helped to transform Darfield into a busy hub. Junction then Horndon Junction, has been viewed as positive. Mayor Sam Broughton said the developments in the town have allowed new people to move into the area and a lot of investment had been put into the main streets of Darfield. He said the new Challenge Darfield and a new shopping centre in McMillan St had been completed recently along with the expansion of Farmlands. But more growth comes with more problems – as outlined in a new planning project on Darfield by a group of Lincoln University students. The project, identifying issues and options for the growing area, was presented by masters students Richard Sheild, Hilary Riordan and Mithran Gopinath to the district council. The project was assigned by the district council. The student’s presentation showed growth was partially due to the town’s conversion

to dairy farming and a shift of population from the Canterbury earthquakes. Fonterra’s plans to have two new cream cheese plants completed by 2020 was also identified as bringing in more people as it created new job opportunities. But key issues halting the town’s growth included the lack of a sewage system, lack of space for commercial expansion and low housing density. Mr McKay, who is also Darfield Community Committee chairman, said planning for the sewage system should have started years ago. “You have got to look 10-20 years out . . . you make the decisions for tomorrow today,” he said. He said while there is no science to prove Darfield needs a sewage system, it needs to get into the district council’s longterm plan to be addressed. Darfield is the largest township in New Zealand without a

reticulated sewage system. Lincoln University adjunct and contract senior lecturer Karen Johnston said the district council asked the students to look at the township because it is a community that could have potential issues. Options to address the sewage problem included a new sewage centre which could also service Coalgate, Glentunnel and Kirwee. “I think that is a big political question for the district councillors to address, because if they move to a reticulated system, then the people who have invested in septic systems already are going to have to move over,” Dr Johnston said. She said the issue is whether Environment Canterbury will continue to give consents for septic tanks rather than requiring the district council to install a sewage system. ECan’s principal consents adviser Paul Hopwood said it can’t

refuse consents for septic tank systems in advance of a reticulated system being installed if the discharge on groundwater can be managed. “Until a reticulated wastewater system is installed, property owners or developers can apply for resource consent for on-site wastewater discharges,” he said. Mr Broughton said the district council has a working party researching the reticulated system and has been unable to identify any health or environmental reason for it. He said while a system could have advantages for the businesses on the main street, it would come at a high economic cost. Two Rivers Community Trust community services stream manager Bev Elder said any movement of rates to pay for projects such as a reticulated system can be desperately difficult for some residents. “Many of them are living lives of desperation now, deciding between should I pay the rent this week or the food this week,” she said. Mrs Elder said it is easy to think of Selwyn as a rich territorial area, but there are pockets in the district which are not. She said the district council should be making decisions for all kinds of demographics rather than being led by developers and people with money. Changes which it could make included allowing studio flats on the back of houses available for people at lower rents and more emergency housing options. Fireworks displays to light up Selwyn By Georgia O’Connor-Harding ORGANISERS OF Selwyn’s two major fire works displays are gearing up to light up the sky in celebration of Guy Fawkes. After the Rolleston and Motukarara fireworks shows were deemed successes last year, both events are set to take place again this Saturday. It was estimated 15,000 people attended the display held at Foster Park last year while about 3000 people attended the Waihora Domain. Rolleston Fireworks Committee chairman Jens Christensen said it is a fairly big night costing the organisation $70,000 to put the event on. News Selwyn residents like the district CONTINUING growth and development has been highlighted in the district council’s annual report for the 2016/17 year. The report, adopted at the district council’s meeting, shows Selwyn’s population is now estimated to be 56,000 with growth expected to continue in the coming years. The district council achieved 86 per cent of its performance targets for the year with 70 per cent of residents rating the district council’s overall performance as “good” or “very good” in this year’s residents Sam Broughton opinion survey. Building activity has remained strong with 2527 building consents issued during the year, to a total value of more than $600 million. Mayor Sam Broughton said the district council is supporting the growth with investment in services, infrastructure and community activities across the district. “Selwyn people value the quality of life they enjoy here,” he said. “As a district council, we are working hard to protect and maintain that, and help residents and businesses make the most of the opportunities our district offers,” he said. A project was launched this year to update the Selwyn District Plan, which controls the activities allowed on different properties, guides future development and makes provision for protection of the district’s environment and heritage. Progress on Rolleston’s town centre also took a significant step forward, as ministerial approval was granted to allow redevelopment of part

of Rolleston Reserve for a library, community space and commercial and retail centre. Foster Park in Rolleston has been expanded with a new hockey mini-turf, along with three new sports fields, additional landscaping and the design and development of a children’s playground. Car parking extensions here and at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre will support the growing importance of these facilities as district sport and recreation hubs. In Darfield, the redevelopment of the skate area at Westview Park was completed, while the Leeston skate bowl was also revamped. Earthquake strengthening of district council facilities is now

mostly completed with work at Darfield Library finished this year. The new Dunsandel Community Centre, which replaces the former hall damaged in the September 4, 2010, earthquake, was largely completed during the 2016/17 year and is now in operation. Significant roading projects included the opening of the new 2.6km Coalgate to Glentunnel cycleway and the construction of 530m of new footpaths. Other projects were the upgrading of Masefield Drive, Rolleston, the extension of Broadlands Drive and the installation of a new roundabout at the junction of Springston Rolleston and Broadlands Drive. Water service projects included

the continued installation of water meters on properties connected to district council water supplies, which will result in properties paying a reduced fixed water rate plus a volumetric usage charge. Water supply improvements are helping to provide higher quality water for our growing population, while a number of improvements to water treatment systems were also completed. Through the year, the district council administered more than $268,000 in discretionary grants, and delivered more than 100 community events across the district. Highlights included the successful launch of CultureFest, showcasing the district’s diverse

cultures, which was held in conjunction with Rolleston’s 150th anniversary celebration. The Annual Report notes the impact of the Port Hills fire, with the total rural firefighting cost to the district council calculated at $7.9 million. The majority of the cost ($7.4 million) has been covered through insurance with the Rural Fire Fighting Fund. Expenditure for the year was $105 million, compared with a budget of $94.6 million. The main variances included finance costs being below budget due to reduced borrowing, the unbudgeted costs associated with the Port Hills fire, and the higher cost of sales from Izone land sales being well ahead of budget. Revenue for the year was $169.8 million compared with a budget of $120.9 million, largely due to growth being ahead of forecasts. Rates revenue was above budget, while growth also contributed to higher than expected revenue from development contributions and vested assets. Development contributions are retained for future infrastructure provision and cannot be used to reduce rates, while vested assets are a non-cash item and are also not available to reduce rates. The district council received higher dividend revenue from investments in Orion New Zealand Ltd and Transwaste Canterbury Ltd, while land sales revenue was also above budget due to sales in Izone being ahead of forecasts. The value of the district council’s net assets increased by $110 million for the year to a total value of $1.503 billion. Sports trust going strong Selwyn Sports Trust executive officer Michael Wilson writes about the growth of the trust over the past five years AT THE beginning of 2013, Selwyn Sports Trust was born on the back of weekly community running group, the Ellesmere Road Runners, and the annual Selwyn Running Festival. Six sports enthusiasts had joined forces to create the trust with the goal of promoting and supporting participation in sport and recreation within the district. The nearly five years on, the trust’s growth has replicated that of the district it is trying to serve. There are now two additional annual events – the Lake Crichton Triathlon and Duathlon Series and the Koru Games. There are also three additional weekly community running groups – Lincoln, Malvern and Rolleston road runners – and four activators engaging with 26 schools and more than 6500 students on a weekly basis. The growth is set to continue. Recently the trust was at the district council to share the story so far and put a longterm funding submission to councillors.

EVENTS: Selwyn Sports Trust executive officer Michael Wilson is looking forward to the trust’s final annual event of the year, the Selwyn Running Festival, on Sunday.

This was part of the trust’s long-term goal to diversify and solidify some of its funding streams in order to continue the growth of its services and

operations. The full-time executive officer and four parttime activators are currently at capacity and to action some of the many new ideas additional capability is required. Up next for the trust is the final annual event of the year – the Selwyn Running Festival – on Sunday. As the founding event for the trust it holds a special place in its calendar. The flat courses in all four race distances – 21.1km, 10km, 5km and 1400m kids dash – allow participants from all backgrounds and of all types to achieve their goals on race day. Based out of Leeston and Southbridge, it really is a fantastic day in the country. On the trust’s horizon is continued growth through involvement in a Bikes in Schools/Bike Skills programme for primary-aged children. There is also continued development of the activator initiative and the possibility of additional events, growth and development of all current events. All of which will feed the ultimate goal of having a wide range of sporting and recreational opportunities within Selwyn to encourage ongoing participation.

News District council shouts barbecue SELWYN residents will get free barbecue food as a way of encouraging neighbours to get to know each other. The mobile barbecue will travel across Selwyn to 18 locations as part of the district council’s annual Meet Your Street programme. As well as a free barbecue, the street gatherings will include music and games for children. District council connecting communities co-ordinator Tyla Harrison-Hunt said the event is a chance for neighbourhoods to get together to catch up with those nearby and make new friends. “These gatherings encourage neighbours to feel part of their local community, and are especially important for residents new to Selwyn to settle in and form new relationships,” he said. The gatherings all take place on Tuesdays between 5.307pm. Invitations will be dropped into mailboxes the week before the gathering. To give more Selwyn residents the chance to meet their street, the district council has funds available for those

keen to organise and host their own street gathering. A subsidy of up to $75 is available for each street gathering. Anyone who lives in a neighbourhood in Selwyn can apply for the subsidy, which has increased from the $50 offered last summer. The gathering can be a small group of neighbours or a whole street.

It may be held at the local reserve, playground, or in a backyard. The district council is also running a competition to give away a bonus Meet Your Street event to one lucky neighbourhood in Selwyn. The Meet Your Street team will provide staffing, a mobile barbecue, drinks (nonalcoholic) and burgers for up to 50 people.

The most common species in New Zealand is the meadow spittlebug (philaenus spumarius), an exotic species first recorded in 1960. The frog-faced adults are six to 10mm long, tan, mottled brown to black in colour, and can jump 70cm when disturbed. Relative to body weight, this jumping effort is better than fleas and equivalent to humans jumping 180m.

Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us WITH THE days warming up, spittlebugs are becoming common around the garden. The green coloured nymphs excrete a very conspicuous frothy, spit-like foam that is used as protection against predators and dessication by the sun. The white spittle is produced from a gland at its rear and bubbles are created

Meet Your Street returns for summer The third annual Meet Your Street programme is set to kick off in time for summer. Selwyn District Council’s mobile BBQ will be visiting 18 different locations around Selwyn providing free street gatherings to encourage neighbours to get to know each other. The gatherings all take place on Tuesdays between 5.30–7pm. Invitations will be dropped into mailboxes the week before the gatherings. To give even more Selwyn residents the chance to meet their neighbours, Council has funds available for those keen to organise and host their own local street gathering. Fun for all at local libraries The new Selwyn District Libraries trial hours have begun and exciting family-friendly activities are planned for every Saturday at all four libraries. Libraries Manager Vicki Carlyon says the extended Saturday hours mean programmes and activities will be available in the weekends as well as during the week. “We wanted to provide a range of fun and interesting activities for everyone to enjoy on their Saturday afternoons. There’s something for all ages on offer,” she says.

The Council’s Annual Report for 2016/17 has highlighted Selwyn’s growth and development, as the population passes 56,000 and continues to climb.

The ‘Time for Fun’ activities will differ each week between the four libraries, beginning this Saturday 4 November.

Mayor Sam Broughton says the report shows the Council is supporting this growth with investment in services, infrastructure and community activities across the district. “Selwyn people value the quality of life they enjoy here,” he says.

Events include Lego®, Christmas crafts, giant colouring in, board games, to BeeBots, tech sessions, Storytime and Rhymetimes. Mr Yipadee is performing this Saturday – see the events listing for details.

The Council achieved 86% of its performance targets for the year, the same as last year, while 70% of residents rated the Council’s overall performance as good or very good, an increase of 5% from 2016.

Significant roading projects included the opening of the new 2.6km Coalgate to Glentunnel cycleway, the construction of 530 metres of new footpaths, upgrading of Masefield Drive, Rolleston, the extension of Broadlands Drive and the installation of a new roundabout at the junction of Springston Rolleston and Broadlands Drive.

Water services projects included the continuing installation of water meters on properties connected to Council water supplies, water supply improvements to provide higher quality water for our growing population, and a number of improvements to water treatment systems. A project was launched to update the Selwyn District Plan, which guides future development and makes provision for protection of the district’s environment and heritage. Progress on Rolleston’s town centre also took a significant step forward, as Ministerial approval was granted to allow redevelopment of part of Rolleston Reserve for a library, community space and commercial and retail centre.

FOSTER DOG PARK TEMPORARY CLOSURE The Selwyn Dog Training Club will use Foster Dog Park for a dog obedience competition on Saturday 4 – Sunday 5 November from approximately 7.30am–5pm both days. The park will be closed for off-lead dog exercise during these times. The club is happy for people to come and watch the competition, but spectators with dogs are asked to keep them on a lead and well away from the competition area. FUNDING OPPORTUITIES ARTS PROJECT FUNDING Selwyn District Council’s Creative Communities Scheme is offering funding for arts projects. Foster Park in Rolleston expanded with a new hockey mini-turf, along with new sports fields, landscaping and development of a children’s playground. Car parking extensions here and at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre will support the growing importance of these facilities as district sport and recreation hubs. Leeston-Southbridge go top in country cricket By Gordon Findlater TWO WICKETS in the opening three overs from opening bowler Tim Field helped LeestonSouthbridge go to the top of the Canterbury country premier one-day competition. Leeston-Southbridge’s fivewicket victory over DarfieldSouth Malvern at the weekend also means that they are now the only unbeaten team in the competition after four rounds. Field finished with figures of 4/30, while Dougal Munro (3/6) and Tim Gruijters (2/5) were unplayable at Leeston Park. Darfield-South Malvern got off to the worst start possible with Field dismissing Nick Jenkins lbw for a duck with the fourth delivery of the match. Sean Carston was then bowled by Field two overs later for just one run, leaving Darfield-South Malvern stranded at 4/2. The visitors made a mini recovery to be 38/2 in the 13th over. However, Field, Gruijters and Munro took four wickets between them for just one run to have Darfield-South Malvern at 39/6. SPORTS Successful event for budding golfers A NEW event run by Canterbury Golf attracted more than 50 children aged four to 13 years to Templeton Golf Club over the weekend. The fun event was played over nine holes using a shortened course with holes varying in length between 100 and 200m. Special large 8in holes were put in the greens for the event making it lots of fun. “The event was really successful attracting many kids that were trying golf for the first time along with other children who had been learning golf and keen to take their skills onto the golf course for this fun event,” said Canterbury Golf development manager Rachel Thow. “It’s an area we would like to develop further to provide opportunities for these children to become more engaged with golf and have fun playing events.” The youngsters also received a few tips from the Canterbury boys under 19 team who were on hand to help guide the groups around the course. A great day out for the kids and their parents who assisted to caddy for the round.

St John attended 213 call outs within Selwyn in September, the Rolleston team attending 180 of these; 129 for medical conditions and 20 to accidents (mainly on the roads). “Demand for St John services varies with Rolleston handling more call-outs,” advises Samantha Phillips, Volunteer Team Manager of the Rolleston Station Volunteer team. Overseeing Selwyn’s and Ashburton’s St John stations is Territory Manager and Intensive Care Paramedic, Ian Rex. He looks after the area’s six stations’ operational and managerial responsibilities like performance, stakeholders, accident reporting, compliance and complaints. Between 7am and 7pm, a paramedic,

EMT (emergency medical technician) and often a volunteer or trainee man Rolleston’s station, with four employees rostered four days on/four days off. Volunteers crew the ambulance after hours. Rolleston’s ambulance is a Turn-Key model, introduced in 2010 to ensure consistency of design and equipment placement in all ambulances. It is a diesel 2-stage turbocharged intercooled Euro-5 6/V cylinder 2015 Mercedes Sprinter 319 CDI, rear wheeldrive, seven-speed automatic, with a side door for increased accessibility. Produced in Germany, it was kitted out in Hamilton with purpose built drawers, cupboards and shelving for storing equipment like splints, oxygen, and other medical supplies. Its

All St John vehicles have an MDT (Mobile Data Terminal), an AVL (Automatic Vehicle Locater) that maps the journey and records the speed travelled, a radio communication system, and a reversing camera. Before every shift, St John response vehicles and equipment are critically checked. The vehicles, which have an eight year’ lifespan are also rotated around the district for increased efficiency and cost savings. In the future, Rolleston will likely move to a single stretchered Gen2 ambulance (introduced in 2016), which has many innovative and practical features including being designed to keep ambulance officers

safer as they treat and transport patients. Its most revolutionary new feature is the automated Powerload Stryker Stretcher System with a 318kg capacity. This helps reduce lifting injuries, a quarter of which involved stretchers last year. Rolleston also has a FRU (first response unit) vehicle, a Ford Mondeo allowing volunteers to quickly respond to callouts. St John’s Clinical Control Centre’s computer-aided system dispatches both vehicles so the Rolleston team sometimes assist crews outside Selwyn. In 2014, St John introduced yellow ambulances and additional reflective signage after research identified this colour as the most visible on the road. Ambulance officers are highly trained and tested on driving under lights, siren, and transporting patients safely. They can exceed the speed limit if lights are flashing and siren is on, depending on the priority of the call-out. If an ambulance is travelling slowly with lights flashing, a very sick person is likely being transported to hospital and ambulance staff are attending them.

This festival which will be held on 26 November not only showcases and provides an exciting day out for all it is also the fundraiser for the Rolleston branch of St John’s Ambulance. “We really wanted to come on board with this as we see this event for those who love cars and a wonderful event for all the family to enjoy, but more importantly helping out St John’s Ambulance who provide such an important and vital service to all members of our community,” says Lisa. “This is an exciting event and we are thrilled to be a part of it.” Lisa and Nigel have a fond admiration for classic cars with the couple owning six now – four Holdens, a Valiant and a Celica. “We have both had cars from a young age, we love them and Nigel really loves working on his and other peoples’ in the Jones Rd Auto workshop as well,” Lisa says. Lisa’s wedding car, the Celica, is one she will never part with. Not only was it her first ever car but it is how she met her future husband when he worked on it. Scented plants to Sue Witteman says we often choose plants for their visual appeal, but picking them for their perfume can be equally pleasing

WE OFTEN don’t think about scent until it wafts up our nostril and catches us unawares, and then we remember how important it is – the olfactory tentacles reach out, memories are triggered and we remember when that particular scent linked us to a person, place or experience. The word ‘evocative’ is an overused adjective when it comes to scent, but it really does fit the sensory experience. Not only is it a link to the past, but it can also lift your mood in the present, and create a boost of happiness or contentment. While fragrance may be considered more often when thinking about or planning the outside garden, it is often overlooked when it comes to the inside. In an effort to rectify this, let’s look at the plants we can grow inside, and in doing so, add another layer of enjoyment to our living environment. When thinking about scented plants, it is helpful to divide them into those that will be inside with us for a short time, and those

that will be there long-term. Short-term plants would include flowering bulbs such as hyacinths and narcissus bulbs, lilies (Christmas or Easter), the sweetsmelling Primula malacoides, and the well-known lily of the valley. After flowering, these short-term plants are usually either planted in the garden or chucked out. Then, there are the plants that will live with us long term, and these are the ones we shall concentrate on. Note that some of the plants may be ones that are somewhat common when grown outside, but when brought inside, they take on special significance. SCENTED PLANTS TO TRY Hoya carnosa (wax flower) – This climbing or hanging plant has waxy, star-shaped white and pink flowers accompanied by smallish dark green leaves. The flowers give off a honeynectar scent, and an older plant can be covered in these blooms. Provide good light, but keep out of direct sun to avoid leaf scorch. Hoyas require well-drained potting mix and to be fed diluted

houseplant food every couple of weeks, especially when in flower. They also like to be root bound (my favourite kind of plant), so don’t be in a hurry to repot them. There is also a green-flowered hoya called Hoya serpens. Jasminum polyanthum (jasmine) – Known for their desire to grow and for their strongly perfumed flowers, this jasmine has pink buds which open to white flowers. Pinch out or cut back the shoots to stop any unruliness and to keep it bushy, and provide a structure or wires for it to grow up or around so that it doesn’t turn into an irksome monster; this will ensure you stay in love with it. Place in bright light and keep moist during the growing period. Also try J. azoricum, whose elegant pure white flowers I particularly like. There are also a couple of variegated jasmines including J. officinale ‘Aureum’ and J. polyanthum ‘Cream Glory’, which not only look fresh with their cream or yellow variegations, but also aren’t as rampant.

For ThE SummEr monThS As the weather warms up even more, the weeds will be popping up more frequently. It is important to remove them regularly, so they don’t take over the garden and compete with your plants for space, water and nutrients. When you have removed all the weeds, add Organic Compost in to the soil. Dig it through your soil and it will help to provide some much needed organic matter, as well as aid in water retention help to promote worm activity.

After you have dug through Organic Compost, give it a water. If you wish to use weedmat, do this now but make sure that you apply it correctly. It needs to create that barrier so the weeds stay away. Using pins or staples to hold the mat down is going to help immensely with this, so don’t skip this step. Choosing your bark mostly comes down to a personal preference, so come down and have a look at what we have. Our team can advise you on which is best if you have specific requirements for the area that it is going on. We do recommend a depth of 10cm to get the maximum benefits from the bark.

Watering the bark after it has been applied will help to settle it on your garden. A pattern for watering should be established, so that the garden doesn’t dry out, and so the bark stays put.

grow indoors or outdoors Stephanotis floribunda (Madagascan jasmine) – This jasmine variety is known for its 6cm pure-white spring-toautumn flowers and its attractive, tidy, dark green leathery leaves. Once again, place it in bright light but not direct sun. Do the usual feeding while in active growth and take care when watering to never let the root ball dry out, but ease back a bit in winter with both the feeding and the watering. The stephanotis is one of the most fragrant of the flowering plants and you can create a circle of scented loveliness by growing it around a hoop. Trachelospermum jasminoides (star jasmine) – Usually thought of as an outdoor plant, star jasmine can be grown inside as long as you have a bit of space. I recall a café that I used to frequent where the ceiling was covered in this jasmine, and as you sat there the scent wafted around you – it was magical. For growing inside, provide it with a decent-sized pot, some welldrained potting mix and some support to climb up or along. There is a variegated version – ‘Variegata’ – that is less vigorous. For another small grower and a different flower colour, try T. asiaticum, with its scented

primrose yellow flowers. Osmanthus fragrans (sweet olive) – The osmanthus family are not known for their shouty flowers, but rather for the sweet scent that their flowers give off. The sweet olive is no looker, but does have agreeable leaves that look a bit like a bay tree. It sits there quietly until the small, off-white flowers open and release a sweet, spicy scent into the air. Water the root ball regularly. Citrus – Bring your lemon, calamondin orange, kumquat, or mandarin inside. The scent of the

If you move the plant for maintenance, put it back facing the light exactly as it was – these plants are prone to flower drop if you change the way they were facing. (Other sensitive plants that can have the same issue are stephanotis and hoyas.) It likes acidic soil, can be thirsty, and I have heard of it being fed throughout the winter to stop the leaves from going yellow. This is an elegant plant and looks especially so when grown as a

small, waxy white flowers is one of the most pleasant and easiest of the scents to live with. Position in bright light and keep watered and well fed. Gardenia augusta syn. G. jasminoides, G. grandiflora, G. florida – With glossy, healthy-looking leaves and reasonably-sized creamy flowers that look as though they are made out of parchment, the gardenia is a bonzer plant. With a good fragrance and a long flowering period from late spring onwards, the gardenia is a good choice for inside. Place it back from the

standard. There is also a prostrate dwarf form called ‘Radicans’ that can also be grown in a hanging basket. Heliotropium arborescens (cherry pie) – This is one of my favourite scents and I always try to have one of these plants in my life. The common name cherry pie is a good clue to how mouth-wateringly good this plant smells. Before you commit to this plant, make sure you can provide enough sun for it – it likes a lot. It has a long flowering life and is impossible to walk past without stopping to take a scented sniff. The leaves are slender and dark green, and the small clusters of flowers usually violet-purple, though there is a mauve and a white form. Brugmansia x candida syn. Datura candida (angel’s trumpet) – If you are wanting something flamboyant with a lot of wow factor, then get yourself one of these. The hanging white flowers look not unlike a couture gown and are large – up to 30cm in length. Make sure you have the space for it though, as it can get quite big. It likes warmth in summer and a cooler, well-lit position in winter. One thing to be aware of is that all parts of the plant are poisonous.

Great ways to maximise storage space It can be hard to judge the amount of storage needed in a new home and while there is something to be said for decluttering and not holding onto possessions no longer needed, there will still be items that are useful and you wish to keep. The size and design of a home largely determines the number of cupboards and storage space available yet opportunities exist for making the most of the space available so the home is more easily kept tidy and clean. When looking at a house plan, consider where storage might be included. For example, open shelving might be fitted in a living room wall and more shelves included in a cupboard for maximum storage, with it worth measuring the height of items and siting shelves accordingly. Including more kitchen cabinetry where space allows, is another option as is corner cupboards where space might otherwise be lost. A Lazy Susan makes it easier to access items though can reduce the amount that can be stowed in the cupboard. Full length A built in laundry bin hides dirty washing.

Raised garden beds with extra wide tops are also good, while outdoor play equipment and balls can be tucked away in a chest or ottoman. Having an outdoor shed offers a weatherproof place for garden tools, the lawnmower and bicycles and helps make the garage more spacious while a lean-to shelter provides a dry place for firewood, potted frost sensitive plants and outdoor furniture over winter.

Buying a property? Get a building inspection Would you get a mechanic to inspect a used car before you bought it, or would you just get a mate who knows a bit about cars to take a look? Prospective property buyers face a similar conundrum – do they pay for a building inspection before making an offer, or just ask a builder friend to check the place out? Buying a car is worrisome enough, but the emotional and financial stakes are a lot higher when it comes to buying property. If you’re going to make a serious investment in something that will have a huge impact on your family’s health, wealth and wellbeing, it pays to get the best advice you can. Ideally, this means engaging a building inspector who can identify significant defects, future or urgent maintenance issues and problems caused by gradual deterioration. They will look for structural problems, any evidence that the property is a leaky building, issues caused by deferred maintenance (such as weatherboards rotting due to peeling paint) and areas where there is damp or mould. This is a visual inspection – a building surveyor will check in the ceiling and under the floor, but they will not cut holes in walls or carry out any other invasive testing. The whole

property should be checked, including fences and any garages or sheds. They will collate their findings in a detailed and easily understood report. Getting a good property inspection carried out isn’t cheap though, particularly if you’re unsuccessful in buying and have to repeat the process. You have a range of choices, from enlisting a builder mate to using a qualified and insured inspector. You can also make an inspection a condition of your offer on a property. If you choose this option, the report must be prepared by a suitably qualified building inspector in accordance with accepted principles and methods. If you then use the report’s findings to get out of the contract, you must provide the seller with a copy of it. Either way, the more you invest in this exercise the safer you will be if things don’t turn out as you had expected. The property pre-purchase inspection industry is not regulated in New Zealand, however the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA) recommends using a qualified building inspector who has professional indemnity insurance, understands the strict legal requirements of their role and carries out their work in accordance with the New Zealand Property Inspection Standard. This is important because they will help protect you if something goes wrong later on. If you discover problems with the property that should have been evident in a building inspection, you can make a complaint to the professional body that the inspector belongs to and seek compensation through the courts. If you buy a property based on a report by someone like a builder mate who is unqualified and/or uninsured, you could end up owning some expensive problems. Even worse, you may severely limit your

ability to seek damages if the property has significant issues that would have been picked up by a more thorough inspection. You have limited other avenues if things don’t turn out to be how they were represented to you. You may be able to rely on the warranties included in the sale and purchase agreement by the seller. They are required to confirm that (among other things) any work they have done on the property was carried out in accordance with any necessary permits or consents required by law. You may also have other legal options which you should speak to your lawyer about. REAA strongly recommends that you speak to a lawyer before you sign the sale and purchase agreement to understand this more. If you are looking to buy it’s a good idea to get in touch with a local building inspector as soon as you start your property search. Ask friends and family for their recommendations and request a sample report from any inspector you contact to get an idea of the kind of information they

provide. Real estate agents can sometimes offer building inspection reports to prospective buyers on behalf of vendors. Treat these as a starting point rather than a definitive diagnostic guide to a property. Paying for your own report means you know the credentials of the person who prepared it, you can be sure of its impartiality and you can seek redress if needed. Depending on what a building inspection finds, you may be able to use a report to help you negotiate with the vendor over price or repairs. Even if a report only finds minor issues, you can still use it as a road map for future maintenance. Knowing what you’re in for is invaluable when you’re buying property, no matter how many times you’ve done it before. Four main types of property ownership Most real estate advertisements are pretty straightforward. There’s an attractive photo, a headline that screams the property’s best features and a list of its vital statistics. Dig a bit further though and things can get confusing. Everyone can decipher the bit that tells you the property is ‘A first home buyer’s dream’, and tick off the number of bedrooms, bathrooms and offstreet parking spaces. But what if the fine print tells you it’s freehold, or leasehold, or – even more confusing, cross-lease? You might not realise it from a brief glance, but how a property is owned has a direct impact on your rights. While some methods of ownership are straightforward, others are slightly more complicated and it’s worth doing your homework to understand their impact. There are four main types of land ownership in New Zealand: freehold, leasehold, unit title and cross-lease. FREEHOLD Freehold, also known as ‘fee simple’, is the most common kind of ownership and the simplest to understand. If you have a freehold property, you have total ownership of the land and anything built on it. That means, generally speaking, that you can live on the property, earn income from renting it out, build on the land, lease it to someone else, use it as security when applying for a loan, gift it by will or sell the land. LEASEHOLD With leasehold ownership, someone else owns the land (with freehold ownership) and the leaseholder has the exclusive right to possession of the land and any buildings on it. If you buy a house or apartment that is built on leasehold land, you have to pay the freehold owner a ‘ground rental’, which is usually paid twice yearly in advance. You are also responsible for rates and other expenses relating to your property. Leasehold ownership is usually subject to terms and conditions that restrict what the leaseholder can do with the buildings or land. The lease will also set out conditions for when the ground rent can be reviewed (usually every seven years). The length of a lease term varies – at the end of the term it can be renewed or revert back to the freehold owner. If you are interested in buying a leasehold property, it’s a good idea to find out exactly what these terms and conditions are, especially because an increasing ground rent rate (and a shortening lease term) can have a serious impact on your ability to sell the property at a later date. UNIT TITLE Unit title ownership is most common in a building development where there are multiple owners. It allows individual

ownership of parts of a single building, or of separate buildings within one complex. Each unit title is made up of three parts: ownership of your particular apartment or unit and any ‘accessory’ units, like garages, private courtyards and storage areas; an undivided share of the ownership of the common property (lifts, laundries, lobby areas, gardens) and an undivided share of the ownership of the units if the unit plan is cancelled. Becoming a unit title holder means you automatically become a member of the complex’s body corporate, which consists of all the unit owners acting as a group. An annual fee is usually charged. A body corporate has a number of responsibilities relating to keeping the property in good order, organising and maintaining insurance, and making sure owners keep to the rules. CROSS LEASE Cross leases are probably the most complicated form of property ownership in New Zealand and lots of people struggle to understand them. Essentially, if you hold a cross lease, you are a part owner of every building on the plot of land, not just the one you occupy, with the other leaseholders. Each cross lease holder is granted what is known as a registered leasehold estate of the particular area and building that they occupy. These leases are usually for 999 years and each one will set out exclusive areas of occupation as well as any shared or common areas. In other words, your house or unit is set apart just for you and your family, but you have equal access to shared areas (like a driveway, or garages, or a common garden area). A cross lease title also includes a plan of the footprint of the property, so you can see if it matches the

property you are looking at. Cross lease ownership means that any structural changes to the property or shared areas must be agreed upon by all the owners. Depending on the terms of the cross lease, you may need to get the other owners’ consent for things like painting the exterior, building a deck or putting up a fence. These provisions are usually referred to as covenants. A covenant may place restrictions on what you may do with the unit or building, so it is important to understand what they mean. This is where things can get extremely tricky. DO YOUR HOMEWORK Whatever the type of title that a property has, it’s absolutely crucial to do your homework before you sign on the dotted line to buy one. A title search will help you find out all the facts about the property’s ownership, boundary and access, as held by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ). Remember to look out for easements or covenants that may differ from your understanding of the property, such as rules about who can live in it, car parking and access. A Land Information Memorandum (LIM) will also show you information held by the local council about the property and land. It’s a really good idea to get a lawyer who can help you navigate all these different documents and understand what they mean. When you have found a property that you’re keen on, the REAA recommends getting an independent assessment of the property done by an inspector who has professional indemnity insurance and carries out their work in accordance with the New Zealand Property Inspection Standard.
